Sister Lousia Interviewed by CL

In an Interview today by Wyatt Williams for Creative Loafing,

Religious folks like to say that God has a special plan for all of us. If that’s the case for Atlanta’s Sister Louisa, you can be sure that God has one hell of a sense of humor.

According to Sister Louisa’s biography, she was leading a quiet life in a convent near Baton Rouge, Louisiana until she met the janitor, “Luscious” Lamar Thibideau. Their love affair caused Louisa to leave the convent in disgrace. The new couple hit road together, eventually ending up in an Airstream trailer here in Atlanta. These days, Louisa makes religious art from objects that “Luscious” finds for her.

Before Louisa’s upcoming show at Aurora Coffee, we wanted to ask her a few questions about life after the convent. She’s a little hard to get in touch with, but her good friend Grant Henry passed along our questions to her.

Hope is like the Ego,
You gotta strengthen it
and then you gotta let it go.

Wake up each day,
assess your current reality,
accept that state of being,
and move forward with confidence.

Forgive yourself
what you didn’t do yesterday,
learn from it,
and quit your goddamn whining.
Nobody wants to hear THAT.

HOPE can be bad for your mental health,
it’s presence says:
I’m not ok today,
but maybe I will be tomorrow.
That’s bullshit.

Sometimes we don’t do something
that we REALLY want/need

because we are scared
of what “they” will think,
how it will look to “them”.

It has been my experience
that “they” is really just fear.
“They” don’t exist.
“They” is MY inability
to muster the courage
to live truthfully.

People who love you
will go with the changes
you need to make
in your life
towards wholeness.

The hardest sentence
I ever learned to say was:
“I can’t do that and stay whole”.

The most effective sentence
I continue to use in life is:
“I can’t do that and stay whole”.

Those who love you want you to be whole.

All others? Fuck ‘em if they can’t take a joke!
